Sprinkler System Basics

September 4, 2024by Peter Hudson

Are you interested in having a sprinkler system installed? Or do you already have one and want to know the basics? There are many components to sprinkler systems, and they all play an important role in working together to allow the system to run properly. Furthermore, it’s important that you understand how these components work to help maximize their efficiency and ensure your plants get the nutrients they need.

Here’s a small guide to the key components of a sprinkler system and how they work together:
  1. Controller

The controller is a big component to the system, as it allows programing of watering schedules and management of the different zones.

  1. Valves & Wiring

Sprinkler valves are usually housed in green circular boxes around the yard and control water flow from the main supply to different zones. Additionally, the controller will send signals to these valves allowing them to open and close.

  1. PVC Piping

Pipes and PVC are usually underground, and they assist in delivering water to plants. The flow of water typically starts at the backflow, then moves to the valves, and from there to the spray heads or drip irrigation.

  1. Sprinkler Heads

Sprinkler heads are noticeable as they are above ground and distribute water across your yard. There are different types of heads that are designed to suit the watering needs of the area.

Spray Heads: Spray Heads give a steady spray pattern in one direction.

Rotar Heads: These heads rotate to cover a large area, and spray in a circular pattern.

Drip-Irrigation: Drip irrigation is also an effective way for watering plants, as it delivers water directly to the root zone.

  1. Back Flow Preventer

The Back Flow is usually placed above ground on the side of the home. Its main purpose is to prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the main supply. Additionally, it’s important for ensuring that the water in your sprinkler system does not mix with potable water.

In the Houston area, it is required to have a pressure vacuum breaker installed, and Southwest Irrigation requires the installation of a rain sensor when setting up the system. However, if your current system doesn’t have a rain sensor, you can add one at any time.
