We are in the middle of winter, and us Texans are certainly feeling the chilly weather. Texas, specifically South Texas, usually has a very hot and dry climate, so when the cooler weather arrives homeowners often find themselves contemplating whether or not to water their lawn. Depending on where you live, how much you should water your lawn can vary. If you are located in the South Texas area, we do recommend to always water no matter what season you’re in.
What are the advantages to watering your lawn in the winter?
Watering your lawn in the winter has several advantages, especially in climates like Texas. Here are some of the advantages:
- Keeps the Plants Hydrated: During the Winter, the soil can dry out causing your plants to become dehydrated/dormant. By keeping your plants well-watered throughout the winter, you help prevent them from becoming too stressed due to a lack of water.
- Continued Growth: By keeping your plants watered, you allow the roots to continue growing. Consistent watering provides moisture that supports growth, helping your lawn stay healthy.
- Avoids Freeze Damage: Watering before a hard freeze can help insulate the roots and prevent damage from cold temperatures. When the soil is hydrated, it’s easier for the roots to retain warmth.
What should my watering schedule look like?
Watering schedules can vary depending on location. However, in the Houston area, we recommend watering 1-2 days per week with a 2a.m.-6a.m. start time.
For your zones with Spray Heads, we recommend 5-10 minutes per cycle. For Rotor and Rvan Zones, we recommend 15-20 minutes per cycle.
For those homeowners who are not located in the Houston area, we do recommend taking a look at your local weather channel and deciding what you feel is right for your lawn.
