7 Simple Steps to Winterization

December 18, 2024by Peter Hudson

Winter is here and it’s time to ensure that your sprinkler system is protected properly from freezing temperatures. There are two ways to protect your sprinkler system, the installation of a freeze relief valve or winterization. Winterization is for homeowners who want to completely shut off their sprinkler system for the winter. The process includes actively turning the sprinkler system off and ensuring that all water from the backflow is completely drained out. Note, you must have an isolation valve to accurately ensure that the system is protected from freezing temperatures.

Here are 7 simple steps to winterize your system at home:

  1. Check for Previous Freeze Damage: Before you turn off the isolation valve, you need to confirm that your backflow is not damaged from the previous freeze. With water pressure on the backflow, turn both check valves to the closed position to see if you have a cracked valve. Water will spray from valve while closing if cracked. If check valves are good, check for any signs of leaking water from top and from the test cocks. If no leaking water, go to step 2. If repairs are needed, call a reputable licensed sprinkler company.
  2. Open test cocks to relieve pressure and drain: The test-cocks are small nozzles that have a small screw in the center of them. Use a flat-head screwdriver to turn the test cocks to a 45-degree angle. Water may spray out, but that’s normal as long as it stops afterward.
  3. Remove Backflow Parts: Inside of the backflow you’ll find the bonnet/poppet, retainer, spring, and check valve. Remove these parts and set to the side for later.
  4. Turn shut off handles and test cocks to 45-degrees: Step 4 is to take the shut off handles and slowly move them to a 45-degree angle. See picture below for example.
  5. Drain Backflow and Syphon all the water out of both valves: To remove all the water from the backflow, we recommend using a tube. Slide the tube down each valve, one at a time. Then, create suction in the tube to draw the water out and dispose of it properly. While this is a tedious process, it is essential to fully drain the system to prevent potential freeze damage.
  6. Put back internal parts of backflow: Now it’s time to reinstall the internal parts of the backflow.

When winterizing always be sure to take your time and make sure all water is drained from the backflow. For more information about freeze protection, visit our website. To schedule a winterization service, give our office a call 281-494-3700. Our licensed technicians would love to assist you.
